The internet is indeed a wonderful thing. You can get answers to virtually any question – some may even be true.
Web designers know this all too well, as we tend to search for guides on how to do all kinds of things. Maybe it’s a cool CSS effect we saw somewhere or how to connect with an API. Whatever coding challenge we face, we’re sure to find a number of examples and support threads that can help.
In theory, this is great. These resources are invaluable in terms of finding solutions for even the most complex issues. But for me, it has turned programming into a very scattered affair.
The Web Designer Toolbox
Unlimited Downloads: 1,000,000+ Web Templates, Themes, Plugins, Design Assets, and much more!
Here’s the situation. I know I have my own limitations as a programmer – and I’m okay with that. Maybe I’ve accomplished more than I thought I could in this area, but I’m still no expert.
Over the years, I’ve conditioned myself to search for easy solutions. Sometimes it’s a WordPress plugin or maybe a little script I found on GitHub. The hope is to either find a complete solution or at least a code snippet that requires only a few minor changes (well-commented by the author, of course) and move on with the rest of my project.
Once in a while, this actually works. But modern websites are getting more complex. They require a higher level of functionality and need to look good on every screen. Thus, finding exactly what I need has become harder.
Instead, I’m finding what appear to be mirages in the desert. It could be a Stack Overflow thread from a developer with a similar issue, or a blog tutorial. While it may look promising, there’s often some key element missing.
So, what do I do? I cut and paste code all over the place – making a mess and running around in a big old circle. Turns out I’m wasting time rather than saving it.
An Epiphany
The result of this method has been a bit of madness. Recently, it came to a head while trying to work with the Google Maps JavaScript API.
There are absolutely tons of threads regarding the things I needed to do (placing multiple markers on a map, for instance). Of course, none fit my situation perfectly. And, while I know some JavaScript, I wasn’t confident that I could write enough on my own to make it all work.
I ended up spending hours switching from one snippet to another with very little luck. Finally, it dawned on me that my approach was just not working. I was haphazardly trying to find a quick fix. And in the process, I was taking myself far away from any real answers.
This led me to try something different. Here’s what I did:
Erased the Mess
I had amassed quite a jumble of code, which I promptly deleted. Maybe that sounds drastic, but it wasn’t working anyway. A fresh start just seemed better at this point.
Wrote a List
Despite my attempts, I did not find a quick and easy solution. Part of the issue may have been that I hadn’t defined any clear description as to what I needed the script to do.
So, I typed up a surprisingly short list of what my Google Maps script had to accomplish. Within that, I set some milestones.
For example, the first thing on the list was to simply display a map on a page. No markers, no fancy options – just a map. The idea was to start small and take the rest one step at a time.
Slowed My Pace
There is a part of my personality that makes me crave ruthless efficiency at work. I feel like every second wasted is keeping me from the rest of my to-do list.
Coding doesn’t really work that way, however. Just like good design, it requires some trial and error. You need patience to do it right. And you don’t generally accomplish everything in one shot.
In that spirit, I slowed down physically and mentally. No more rushing about. I promised myself that I would avoid support thread hopping – at least until I had a firm idea of exactly what my sticking points were. For the most part, I stuck to it.
A Better Approach for Better Results
It’s amazing what hitting the reset button on a coding project can do. Starting over and slowly tackling one piece of the puzzle at a time led to a less stressful process. While I still hit some roadblocks, it was much easier to research and experiment with a single issue, as opposed to everything at once.
I think there’s a bigger lesson in the whole experience as well. Web design, like much of our culture, seems so focused on having answers delivered on demand. And since there are an endless amount of resources out there, it’s easy to fall into a trap of hoping that someone else can solve your challenges with cut-and-paste speed.
But those resources are there to lend a helping hand – not do our work for us. Looking at the Stack Overflows and CodePens of the world are a great place to get ideas and inspiration. But they can’t remove every single barrier. In the end, we still have to put in the time and effort to make things work.
In my case, I think part of the struggle was that I learned to do a Google search long before I knew any fundamentals of code. As a result, I ended up reversing the order of how to get things done. I looked for complete solutions first, instead of just searching for the particular problems I needed to solve.
Hopefully, I’ve learned my lesson. Because another challenge is undoubtedly right around the corner.
Without a doubt, Laravel is one of the fastest-growing frameworks for backend web development in 2019. The increasing popularity of Laravel is owed to its ever-growing developer community and newbie friendliness.

FRIDAY, Sept. 20, 2019 (HealthDay News) — Young and middle-aged adults with low vitamin D levels may live shorter lives, a large study suggests.
The findings come from a 20-year follow-up of more than 78,000 Austrian adults. Researchers found that those with low vitamin D levels in their blood were nearly three times more likely to die during the study period than those with adequate levels.
When it came to the cause of death, vitamin D levels were most clearly linked to deaths from diabetes complications.
The findings were to be presented Friday at the annual meeting of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes, in Barcelona — and are considered preliminary. Experts said they do not prove that low vitamin D levels, per se, cut people’s lives short.
But the results add to a large body of evidence tying inadequate vitamin D to various health effects — beyond the long-recognized consequence of thinner, weaker bones. Studies have also pointed to higher risks of conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure, certain cancers, and autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis.
“The role of vitamin D in the body appears to be more than simply assisting calcium absorption and bone health,” said Connie Diekman, a registered dietitian who was not involved in the study.
However, the research is “still evolving,” noted Diekman, who has served as president of the nonprofit Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. That means it’s still unclear whether boosting your vitamin D intake — through food or pills — will prevent various diseases or lengthen your life.
In fact, a recent study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, yielded disappointing results: Researchers found that vitamin D supplements did not help prevent type 2 diabetes in people at high risk of the disease.
But that may be in part because supplements later in life might not be enough to prevent a disease, according to Dr. Rodrig Marculescu, the lead researcher on the current study.
Many health conditions, including type 2 diabetes, get their start earlier in life, said Marculescu, of the Medical University of Vienna in Austria.
Continued
On the other hand, he said, vitamin D supplements might have more of an impact on the odds of dying from a disease.
His team found a clear relationship between blood vitamin D levels and the risk of early death — especially among people who were younger than 60: Those with levels of 10 nmol/L (nanomoles per liter) or less had almost a three-times higher risk of dying during the study, versus those with adequate levels (50 nmol/L).
In contrast, middle-aged and younger people with vitamin D levels at or above 90 nmol/L had a lower death risk than those at the 50 mark.
In general, vitamin D concentrations of 50 nmol/L or higher are considered to be high enough for overall health, according to the U.S. National Institutes of Health.
When the researchers zeroed in on causes of death, it turned out that vitamin D levels showed only weak connections to heart disease and cancer. Instead, people with low levels (below 50) had a more than fourfold higher risk of dying from diabetes complications, versus those with adequate levels.
It’s not clear why. But, Marculescu said, there are plausible reasons that vitamin D levels would be particularly linked to diabetes: The vitamin, which acts as a hormone in the body, helps regulate the immune system. That’s relevant to type 1 diabetes, Marculescu noted, because it is an autoimmune disease.
Vitamin D is also important to the cells that produce the hormone insulin — which regulates blood sugar — and to the body’s sensitivity to insulin. That’s relevant to type 2 diabetes, Marculescu pointed out.
For now, he said, the findings “further strengthen the already very strong rationale for intensifying vitamin D supplementation, especially during childhood and at younger ages.”
Specifically, he pointed to recommendations from the Endocrine Society. They suggest that adults get 1,500 to 2,000 IU of vitamin D per day, while children and teenagers get 600 to 1,000 IU.
The body naturally synthesizes vitamin D when sunlight hits the skin, but cold climates — and concerns about sun exposure — can limit that source.
Diekman suggested that people have their blood vitamin D level checked. If it’s low, she said, talk to your doctor about how to boost it — whether through supplements or foods such as vitamin D-fortified dairy products, juice or cereal.

Can a relatively unknown plant native to Indonesia be the key to fast weight loss? Maybe! Garcinia cambogia is a small, pumpkin-shaped fruit that’s often added to meals to make them more filling, according to doctoroz.com. In some villages of Malaysia, it’s also used to make a soup that’s eaten before main meals because of its appetite-suppressing properties.
Now studies suggest that when paired with a healthy diet and exercise regime, taking garcinia cambogia extract in supplement form may help accelerate weight loss.
How does it work?
The specific extract being used in garcinia cambogia supplements is called hydroxycitric acid (HCA) and it works in two ways to promote weight loss:
First, it suppresses your appetite by increasing serotonin levels. Low levels of serotonin are linked to depression and anxiety, which drive many people to eat emotionally. Thus, as your serotonin levels rise, your mood improves and lessens the drive to reach for food during emotional situations.
Second, HCA stops the fat-making process in your body by inhibiting a key enzyme called citrate lyase that your body needs to make fat from carbohydrates. It also may help lower LDL or “bad” cholesterol.
While the plant and its fruit has been eaten safely for years, people who are breastfeeding or pregnant shouldn’t take an HCA suplement. Additionally, diabetics who take insulin or glyburide should talk to their doctors before popping an HCA supplement since it may cause an unsafe drop in blood sugar. And although HCA may help lower cholesterol, those taking a statin should consult a physician because HCA can increase the risk of harmful side effects such as muscle degradation. Lastly, as with all dietary supplements, HCA is not evaluated by the FDA for safety or effectiveness.
What should I look for in a quality supplement?
Look for “garcinia cambogia” or “GCE” with at least 50 percent HCA. Take 500 to 1000mg before each meal, and make sure to take no more than 3000mg total per day.
Does it really work?
Obviously, taking an HCA supplement alone won’t help you shed pounds. But in conjunction with a healthy diet and regular exercise, the studies seem promising. In fact, participants in a recent study who took an HCA supplement lost about four pounds per month, on average.
