jsmad is a JavaScript-powered MP3 decoder which allows browsers to play MP3 files without Flash .
The project is actually the port of the popular libmad audio decoder and a great effort of translating 15,000 lines of C code.
It has support for ID3 (with most of the tags) and works out-of-the-box in Firefox, requires "enabling Web Audio API" in Chrome and other browsers are not yet compatible.
As you can guess, the project is pretty experimental. With better browser support, it will be so useful specially for building real-time audio applications implemented in JavaScript.

WordPress, without any doubt, can be used to create any type of website like blogs, newspapers, social networking and much more.
Jigoshop is a free plugin for e-commerce-enabling WordPress installations to easily sell both physical and digital products.
It allows the admin to track orders, views sales reports and track the inventory from a custom dashboard.
There are widgets like shopping cart, product search, navigation and filtering-by-price which can be positioned on any part of the website.
The store has several marketing tools like displaying related items automatically, discount coupons and cross/up sell.

Viget Inspire, "an inspiring blog which discusses web design standards, trends and techniques", has an experiment on the uses of CSS3 box shadows.
The article shares 39 original uses of "box shadows" and it is a great showcase of what can be accomplished with this CSS3 property.
In order to create the effects, some examples have multiple box shadows and make use of other CSS properties like :before/:after, transition, webkit-keyframes, text-shadow and background-image: gradient.

CSS Lint is an exciting open source project which helps finding the problems and inefficiencies in the CSS code.
As expected, it displays any parsing errors like mis-typed characters which may end-up in non-rendered rules.
Other than that, CSS Lint checks for the common best CSS coding practices and warns you about the:
- adjoining classes (which are problematic in IE7 and IE6)
- empty rules which are inefficient
- correct use of
display (as some rules will be ignored if used together)
- usage of too many floats, web-fonts and font-size declarations
- heading styles to be declared once
- and more..
The rules are pluggable, new ones can easily be added (the web interface is mentioned to be improved soon for making some checks optional).
As the website states "it will hurt your feelings but help coding better" : ).

As a small team of developers/friends, we had created a simple intranet platform (years ago) to share ideas, files (and keep backups), manage our e-mails, etc.
Few days ago, after discussing "how awesome it would be to use the file sharing module of it from a Dropbox-like application", I started searching for any open source tools that can do the job.
As expected, yes, there is open source for everything and found very nice resources that can help us accomplish the project with almost no (or few) coding.
Considering you may use them in your own projects/platforms or have an idea of building a file storage and sharing application, here is a complete list of open source Dropbox alternatives (that are updated regularly):
This is a file sharing and collaboration tool which allows you to instantly synchronize with any Git repository (SFTP is on the way).
It can connect to any number of hosts + allows you to follow and add/remove files into any number of projects.
Growl notifications let you know when a change by a team member.
Syncany (Windows & Linux)
Syncany is a very promising and open source file sharing + storage application which is still under heavy development.
It can use almost any type of storage including local folders, FTP, Amazon S3, Google Storage, IMAP and more.
The data is encrypted locally which is nice for the security of sensitive information and has support for versioning.
iFolder (Windows, Mac & Linux)
Using a centralized storage space (iFolder), the application keeps the copy of files/folders both locally and remotely by keeping them in sync.
For a minimum bandwidth usage, it only downloads/uploads the modified file portions.
You can share the folders with other users and set the access rights of each user.
Also, optionally, a web interface allows reaching files from anywhere, anytime.
IQBox is a SVN client which keeps files in sync automatically using any SVN server.
It runs quietly in the background, only syncs when CPU is available and upload the changed parts of files for a quick synchronization process.
The application stores files centrally and encrypted with automated versioning and backup.
It runs under a Apache, PHP and MySQL/PostgreSQL environment and can be reached from any device.
QtdSync (Windows & Linux)
QtdSync is a feature-rich GUI for the popular rsync which can backup both local and remote files.
It can take differential backup or just synchronize and has a restore option.
Multiple users can work with the same account and comes with a user management system.
The server requires Windows but the clients can also work in Linux.

Subversion, the open source and popular version control system, is a great tool for an organized coding environment where multiple users can work on the same files and tracking the changes/versions is possible.
uberSVN is a free application which transforms a standard Subversion setup into the next level by adding social features and more to it.
With the application, teams get a homepage that profiles the team members, lists the projects they’re working on, repositories they’re using and their latest activity and status.
Team members can see each other’s real-time progress by simply subscribing to Twitter-like feeds that managers can also monitor.

Building good-looking HTML forms which work well in every browser and applying client+server-side validation usually takes a serious development time.
Zebra_Form, a free PHP library, handles this process very well and enables us to create secure and chic forms with a few lines of PHP code.
The output can be generated either with the ready-to-use styles (with valid HTML) or with any new/custom ones.
An integrated cross-site scripting prevention mechanism removes any possible malicious code submitted. It also helps preventing automated spam submissions.
The client-side validation is handled with jQuery, alerts are displayed inside tooltips and many validation types can be used (like "required, e-mail, length, etc.").
Besides standard input types, Zebra_Form supports Ajax-like file uploads, date-time pickers and captchas.

The first release candidate (RC1) for WordPress 3.2 is now available.
An RC comes after the beta period and before final release. We think we’re done, but with tens of millions of users, a variety of configurations, and thousands of plugins, it’s possible we’ve missed something. So if you haven’t tested WordPress 3.2 yet, now is the time! Please though, not on your live site unless you’re extra adventurous.
Things to keep in mind:
- With more than 350 tickets closed, there are plenty of changes. Plugin and theme authors, please test your plugins and themes now, so that if there is a compatibility issue, we can figure it out before the final release.
- Users are also encouraged to test things out. If you find problems, let your plugin/theme authors know so they can figure out the cause.
- Twenty Eleven isn’t quite at the release candidate stage. Contents may settle.
- If any known issues crop up, you’ll be able to find them here.
If you are testing the release candidate and think you’ve found a bug, there are a few ways to let us know:
To test WordPress 3.2, try the WordPress Beta Tester plugin (you’ll want “bleeding edge nightlies”). Or you can download the release candidate here (zip).

TN3 Gallery is a professional and very flexible jQuery image gallery plugin for displaying and rotating a collection of images in various ways.
It works cross-browser (including mobile), has multiple transition effects, can show captions and present the thumbnails horizontally or vertically.
The plugin can automatically generate these thumbnails with or without resizing them on the server-side (with the help of a PHP file) and enable users to browse the gallery by clicking to these thumbnails.
Thumbnails are not the only way to view the images, there are also prev-next buttons, mouse-wheel + keyboard support, auto-slideshow and, optionally, bullet-type-of-navigation can be used rather than thumbnails.
A lovely feature is the ability to present multiple albums with each album having its own thumbnail and caption to help users better understand "what is inside".
