Here's what was popular in the PHP community one year ago today:
Web designers seem to get a lot of unsolicited business offers. Over the years, I’ve received notes from people who wanted to either buy my business or partner with it in some way.
Truth be told, I disregard a lot of it as spam. It’s often fairly easy to figure out what’s legitimate and what’s not (if you spell my name wrong or mention a service I don’t actually provide, that’s a clue).
Still, there are occasions when a sincere offer comes through. When that happens, it may be tempting to jump right in. Not so fast! It’s always a good idea to slow your roll and take some time to rationally think things through.
Not all opportunities are created equally. Therefore, consider the following before signing on with anyone:
What’s Involved?
Partnerships come in all shapes and sizes. Sometimes it’s a front-end designer who needs your development expertise for one or more projects. Or perhaps it’s someone with an idea for a business and is willing to share a cut of any profits. There really aren’t any limits when it comes to the types of offers you might receive.
Regardless of the offer (and how good it may sound), it’s important to clarify exactly what role you would play in the arrangement. To get a more complete picture, ask a lot of questions, such as:
- Why are you reaching out to me, specifically?
- What responsibilities would I have?
- Would I be considered an equal partner?
- Would I have autonomy to make decisions?
- What’s the ultimate goal?
Depending on what’s being discussed, you may have other pertinent questions to ask. Be as direct and specific as possible – it’s the only way to find out exactly what the other party is thinking.
How Will It Affect My Business?
Once you have a firmer grasp of your potential role, the next item to consider is the overall effect this joint venture would have on your business. What you determine here may be the main factor in whether or not to move forward.
The top considerations in this area are money and time:
Your Bottom Line
A partnership that brings you a steady flow of work had better offer a steady income, as well. These, of course, are the kinds of deals you’d rather be a part of. Adding to your bottom line without having to scrape up new clients can be very beneficial. However, in these cases you’ll want to set some ground rules regarding your availability – which we’ll get to in a bit.
On the other hand, potential deals that promise you a certain percentage of profits (a.k.a. “a piece of the game”) aren’t always what they’re cracked up to be. Yes, there is some possibility that things explode (in a good way) and riches rain down on you. But it’s also quite possible that the person on the other end has no money, or is not willing to spend anything for your services.
In all honesty, I’ve received a number of proposals that offered profits over a simple payment for services. I’ve never taken anyone up on it. Whether you do so or not should depend on:
- Your comfort level in potentially doing a lot of work that you’ll never be paid for;
- Your judgement as to the other party’s character and sincerity;
- Your belief (or lack thereof) in whatever type of arrangement is being proposed;
If you feel that the arrangement can grow your income, then it may be worth further exploration.
Your Workload
Another major consideration is how much of your time would be required to partake in this proposed partnership. If you have lots of free time, perhaps this fills a gap. But if you’re already crazy busy, you might risk setting yourself up for a highly-stressful situation.
This is also a good reason to fully understand your role before signing on that dotted line. When you have an idea of what type of work is involved, you can better determine how it will affect your schedule. Large, complex projects will require a lot of focus. But even simple tasks can frequently interrupt your workflow.
Then, there is also the potential impact this would have on your existing clients. If you would no longer have enough time to properly serve them, it could prove costly for your business.
Making the Right Decision
Coming to a final determination of whether or not to move forward can be difficult. This is especially so in cases where you genuinely like an offer and believe in its potential.
In the end, it all comes down to where you are and where you want to go. If you’re happy with where your career is at, you’ll want to seriously think about the implications of disrupting it by saying “yes”.
But, if you do think it’s time for a change in direction, it’s worth studying up on what you believe to be a good opportunity. Either way, make sure to do your homework and think about the consequences involved.

BEIRUT: Over the past few years, the internet observed an immense rise of the “Instagram solution”, which is essentially fixing all your life’s problems through a life hack or tidbit you saw advertised on the application.
A widely advertised product is detoxifying tea. Previously known as “slimming tea” and “diet tea”, it’s now referred to in a vaguer, more positive light, “detox tea” or “cleansing tea”.
This change in language painted it in a new light in the new age of fitness obsession and chasing online clout. While dietary tea isn’t a new concept, it rose in prominence the past few years. It’s advertised by countless celebrities and models, with millions of followers, through multiple manufacturers.
Most of these products have similar ingredients; ginger, lemon juice, green tea, oolong, guarana, garcinia cambogia extract, etc. While all of these ingredients are natural, they could still be harmful in some doses.
A common misconception is that if something is herbal and natural, then it’s healthy, and one hopes that it is. But, in reality, an ingredient like garcinia, while natural, is a weight loss supplement and appetite suppressant.
It’s important to note the odious side effects it can have on consumers. According to Healthline, a health information and resource medical website company, detox teas may cause Diarrhea, abdominal cramps, nausea, rising blood sugar, dehydration, and more.
“The only weight one would lose is water weight from going to the bathroom more than usual. Even then, you’d gain the weight back very easily,” Shaden Shaaban, licensed dietician, told Annahar, “Losing all this water weight could help in cleansing your body from toxins, but there’s a big risk of dehydration.”
The truth about these teas is that…they’re laxatives. The herbs help the fibers work better, which “helps things move along,” Shaaban said, but invigorating your bathroom schedule isn’t healthy either.
Shaaban finds that the only way cleansing tea could be beneficial is if consumed alongside a healthy, balanced diet and regular exercise. She stated that regular green or cinnamon tea would be enough to rid our body of unwanted toxins and that she wouldn’t recommend “Instagram tea” to any of her patients, especially patients with diabetes or any blood-sugar or heart-related diseases.
A particularly dangerous thing about this tea is that it makes the consumer feel full even if their body is hungry. The tea is supposed to be drunk in the morning with or without breakfast, thus you’d lose your appetite for the day.
“You might feel the need to binge eat in the evening then purge everything afterward, which is extremely bad for your body,” Shaaban explained. This is how an eating disorder forms; you wouldn’t get the desired outcome from the tea, so you’d stop eating or eat very irregularly.
Bulimic and anorexic habits would shape and it would take a toll on you, physically and mentally. This is especially harmful to those who are ingesting the tea with the sole purpose of losing weight and so would stop at nothing to achieve their goal.
Teenage girls with self-esteem issues are most prone to being victims of these laxatives. The tea is mainly advertised towards them and is feeding off their body image issues and disorders in the most predatory way.
Instagram influencers need to be held accountable for the products they advertise. Their audience is mainly young girls and these companies prey on their low self-esteem. We must raise awareness against these sponsored posts and about the actual right way of going healthy, which is definitely not “ingest an ungodly amount of laxatives and wait.”

With the power of HTML5 and the ease adding multimedia through technologies such as WordPress oEmbed, anyone can add compelling video or audio content to their website. And, while it’s great that default media players are included from a purely functional standpoint, so much more can be done to improve the user experience.
The default player may provide basic functionality, but it doesn’t necessarily match your branding or offer some more advanced features. So designers have taken it upon themselves to add creative flair, along with high-end functionality to create some incredibly unique media players. Take a look at some of our favorites below and feel free to experiment with the source code.

Audio Players
Round and Beautiful
This circular audio player from Sebastian Beltz puts the straight edges of a standard media player to shame. It’s quite beautiful to look at, intuitive and the inclusion of sharing/favorite buttons makes it a more complete UI.
Draggable Playlist
The fact that you can drag this audio player around your screen is cool. But even better is the simple and smart UI that Antoinette Janus has created. Scrolling through the playlist and playing the selected track is quick and painless.
Accessibility Built In
It’s a simple player, indeed. But Joe Watkins has added in a terrific alternative UI for accessibility. The text-based buttons for play and pause ensure that anyone can consume the media. The ability to view a transcript is just brilliant.
Material Design Comes to Audio
Michael Zhigulin’s use of Material Design on this player is outstanding. From the popular “card” layout to the smooth animations, it fits in nicely with Google’s standard.
Spinning Some Vinyl
The concept here is just too cool. Matt Stvartak’s player is basic in functionality, but the rotating vinyl that pops out of the sleeve is a standout design.
Video Players
Smooth and Responsive
Part of the idea behind HTML5 media was to ensure that mobile devices were able to access the same content as desktops (as opposed to Flash). Simon Goellner’s video player handles responsiveness with ease and the fact that it can be styled with some simple CSS is very welcome.
Labeled Controls
What’s nice about Tadaima’s HTML5 video player is that each item on the control bar shows a text label when the user hovers over it. While video controls are generally intuitive, adding this extra touch ensures that everyone knows exactly what’s going on.
Ultimate Accessibility
We mentioned Joe Watkins’ audio player above, but his video player also deserves some love. There are options here for transcripts, closed captioning, sign language (which opens a separate video panel on the side) and descriptions. It’s everything you need to bring accessible video to your site.
YouTube Playlist
Of course, not everyone hosts their own videos. So having an attractive and easy-to-use player like bachors’ YouTube Channels Playlist is a must-have for many sites. What’s also nice is that this example has a number of customization options.
Video That Moves With You
A big trend we’re seeing lately is the ability of a video to “move” along with the user as they scroll down a page. Charley Pugmire has built a nice example of this. It’s a YouTube video that is full-width at the top of the screen then shrinks into the sidebar on scroll.
Media Matters
The examples above run the gamut from simple to turbo-charged. But one thing that really stands out is the ability to create a media player that matches your desired style and functionality. And it’s also encouraging that making this content accessible to everyone is on the mind of more than one designer.
There is any number of ways that we can take the plain old media player and turn into something special. Hopefully, these examples will inspire you to go beyond the basics.
